Term 4 - Week 1 notices and reminders

As we wrap up another busy term, a huge thank you to all our whānau for your continued support. A special thank you to our wonderful PTFA and Ag Day Committee, who have worked incredibly hard to bring us so many fantastic events this term – particularly our incredible Ag Day today!

  • Thursday - Plant entries to the hall by 9am

  • Thursday - Jolly Jar buying day! See details below.

  • Thursday - Pizza day

  • Friday - Ag day - lots of information below

As we get into week 10 and our final build up to Ag Day, please keep in mind that this event is made possible by a group of parent volunteers who work very hard to serve our community and to provide such an exceptional event for our tamariki. Please consider how you might be able to contribute in the future - as Ag Day is pretty special, and if we are collectively keen for it to continue, we need more people to step up and pitch in to make it a success.

Please be sure to thank our amazing Ag day committee, and in particular Nicci and Fraser Pallin-Simmonds, for all that they have done for us. This year is Nicci and Fraser’s last year with us, as their youngest heads off to high school. This incredible family has served our community for 18 years and we are grateful for how Ag Day has flourished under their leadership and guidance.

Squishy Toys

Sadly, we have made the decision to ban squishy toys that are brought from home. While they are certainly popular, they are becoming a significant distraction in classrooms and are also causing issues with swapping and trading between children. We are also aware that some squishy toys contain liquids or gels that we do not want spilling or leaking at school if they burst.

Please help us by ensuring your child keeps their squishy toys at home and does not bring them to school.

We recognise that some children benefit from using a fidget to support their concentration and self-regulation. Where this is part of a child’s learning needs, our Learning Support team will provide an appropriate fidget that supports the child without becoming a distraction for others.

Thank you for your support.

  • Our lovely neighbours at the Hallertau are kindly allowing us to use their car park on Ag Day. We are very grateful to them.

  • Please refrain from parking in our bus bay on the day. This is for buses and for any emergency vehicles. There is no parking on the field.

  • Please also show courtesy to our neighbours by not blocking driveways or parking on yellow lines on the street.

  • There will be no crossings operating on this day. Please take care and drive safely around our tamariki.

Organisation for all animals (including pets)

Lambs, kids (goats) and calves

  • All animals will be vet checked before being allowed to compete.

  • All children with an animal at school must be under the supervision of a parent/carer

  • Lambs have to be shown in natural condition. No washing or brushing as this removes the protective oil lanolin from their wool.

  • Parents are not allowed in the rings. Judges, stewards, children and animals only please.

For those who are new…here is some information on what actually happens on Ag Day:

On Ag Day there are rings (small areas) set up on our field for those competing with their animals. On arrival, children who have calves, chickens, kids, lambs and pets register on the field. They then go to the ring they are assigned and have tasks to do to compete with their animal.

Read below about who is responsible for your child on the day depending on what they are doing on the day.

There will be food trucks, a cake stall and sausage sizzle. It’s a really fun day, particularly for those who may not live rurally or be new to the area.

Grandparents, cousins, friends etc are all welcome. People generally find it a fun day out. Remember to bring lots of cash with you (some vendors will have Eftpos machines).

The day ends with a ‘grand parade’ where all the children come to a spot in front of the hall and we then have a prize giving ceremony. This is approximately at 1pm.

Children who are not participating but are at school, will have a teacher supervising them for the day. They will have a chance to go for a walk around and enjoy Ag Day as spectators.

Ag Day is a very special day in our school calendar. It is a fun day where participation and competition are as important as each other. Spectators please remember to be quiet when judging is in progress as judges will need to question each competitor and calling conditions need to be consistent for everyone. Your assistance on the sidelines is very much appreciated.

Who is responsible for my child on Ag Day

  • If your child has a kid, calf, chicken, lamb or pet you are responsible for them for the entire day. You register on the field on arrival with your child and supervise them for the duration of the day.

  • If your child has a plant, they have the option to come to school or to be with you for the day. You will need to let your child’s teacher know if you plan to have your child with you and not at school. If you are not going to have your child with you all day, then they arrive at school as per normal and get marked off the roll in their class first. Please note you cannot sign them in and out. You will need to choose if they are with you or with the class.

  • If your child has not registered for Ag Day, then it is a normal school day for them. We know some parents would like to have their children with them to enjoy Ag Day. If this is something you would like to do, that is fine. You will need to please let your child’s teacher and the office know.

Please note that we still need to account for every child on Ag Day, so please communicate your plans clearly with our office and your child’s teacher. Please note that you cannot sign your child in and out as we are allocating staffing accordingly. Kindly choose which option suits you best and let us know.

Ag Day Raffle Tickets and Bake Stall

The PFTA and Ag day committee are holding their annual Ag Day raffle and bake stall. We have some awesome prizes for the raffle and are looking forward to receiving everyone’s baked goodies. Your child (oldest in each family) will have brought home a sheet of raffle tickets for you to sell and a cake box for you to fill. The raffle tickets and money need to be returned to school by Wednesday 23 September and baking can be dropped off at the school hall before or after school on Thursday 24 September or on the morning of Ag Day. There are additional cake boxes available at the school office and if you love baking, make sure you enter our cake competition. We appreciate all your efforts to support our fundraising for the school - happy selling and baking!

A&P Show/Franklin Group Day

After our Ag Day, children have the option to participate in the Clevedon A&P Show (21-22 November) with their kid/calf/lamb or to join the Franklin Group Day (14 October).

Jolly Jars - Friday

Our famous jolly jar mufti day is on Friday. Children dress in mufti on this day and bring along a jolly jar, or two, or three! If you are able to make more than one per child, that would be amazing as we were a little short last year. They don’t buy the jolly jars on this day - only bring them in.

For those new to jolly jars, please see picture examples below. Some of our kids may argue that this is what Ag Day is about! Children bring in jolly jars filled with treats, small toys or nick nacks. Then on a set day, children can purchase these.

Jolly Jars will then go on sale the day before Ag Day (24 September). Children bring in money between $3 and $10 to purchase a jolly jar each.

Ag day prep afternoon (Also known as Ribbon Rolling) - Thursday

Preparation for Agriculture Day is officially underway, with a dedicated push to get all materials ready for the event. The team will gather in TRR (room between rooms 2 and 3) at 3:15 pm to tackle the essential setup jobs. Tasks on the agenda include laminating display cards and signage, precision cutting of event materials, and sorting ribbons into boxes. It’s a classic hands-on assembly effort, bringing everything together quickly so the day runs seamlessly for participants and judges alike. If you can help, please pop down for an hour or two on Thursday after school.

Safety around our school

Unfortunately, we need to once again remind our parent community to be mindful of everyone’s safety around our school. An accident and tragedy only needs to happen once and sadly none of us are immune to this.

  • Please drive slowly and carefully in and around our bus bay.

  • Mind your speed around our school, and in particular, around the Clevedon-Kawakawa Bay Road side.

  • Please use the crossing. It really isn’t that much further to walk. Other motorists can’t always see you.

  • Avoid parking on the yellow lines. When you do, you remove the visibility for our children who volunteer for crossing duty, and you put their safety at risk.

Running a few minutes late, or needing to walk a few extra steps, is not worth a child’s life. Please help us make our pick up and drop off times safer.

Library books due back - end of term

All school library books need to be returned to your child’s classroom or to the returns box outside the library (in the Hall) by Friday. There may be a slight delay in getting them scanned back into the computers, please bear with us. Appreciate your support with looking after our library books.

Uniform reminder

A friendly reminder to please ensure your child comes to school each day wearing the correct school uniform. We have noticed an increase in branded jumpers, non-uniform shorts, colourful or sparkly shoes, and decorative headbands being worn at school.

Please also remember that if your child's hair is below their shoulders, it should be tied back. We are also asking children with makeup to remove it when they get to school - please talk to your children about this before they leave home.

Wearing the correct uniform helps set the tone for learning and creates a sense of belonging and pride in our school community. Thank you for your support in helping us maintain these expectations.

Click here for our uniform guidelines.

Alice - whole school matinee viewing

The whole school will be walking to the Clevedon Community Hall on Thursday to watch our production of Alice. Please note that children will not be on site and our office will be closed between 11am and 1pm.

We ask that you avoid picking up your child during this time, but if it is absolutely necessary, then please come to the Community Hall (although children will not have their bags etc with them).

Animal mufti dress up - Friday

On Friday we have our annual mufti day dress up as part of our build up to Ag Day. Please bring a gold coin donation. Funds raised go to our Ag Day committee to run this incredible event.

Ooshie Trade Day: Tuesday 18 August

Is your child looking to swap their duplicate Ooshies?

Next Tuesday, 18 August, we are holding a supervised Ooshie Trade Day during morning tea and lunch!

Tables will be set up on the top court by Rooms 3 and 4. Teachers will remind students in class on Monday to pack their trading collections for the next day.

To make sure everyone has a fun, safe, and positive experience, we ask that parents go over these ground rules with their children beforehand:

  • Fair Trades Only: Trading should be mutually agreed upon with no peer pressure.

  • No Trade-Backs: All trades are final once completed.

  • One at a Time: Students must wait their turn, keep their hands to themselves, and avoid reaching over others.

  • Respect the Leaders: Students must follow the instructions of the student/teacher leaders supervising the area at all times.

  • Honesty Matters: Zero tolerance for any dishonest behaviour.

Thank you for your support in helping us keep this a fun and fair activity for all!

Thank you to our PTFA and covered court update

A huge thank you to our incredible PTFA for donating a further $5,000 to the school from their fundraising efforts. We are also incredibly grateful to our wider school community for supporting the many events and fundraising activities held throughout the year.

Every raffle ticket purchased, sausage sizzle enjoyed, movie night attended, and event supported helps provide opportunities and facilities for our children that simply wouldn't be possible through our regular school funding. These are not "extras" we receive from elsewhere. They are made possible because of the generosity and commitment of our community.

Over the past five years, our PTFA and wider fundraising efforts have enabled us to provide two fantastic new playgrounds for our children. We are now working towards our next major projects: a covered court and an astroturf area. If all goes to plan, construction of the covered court will begin during the October school holidays, with the astroturf to follow over the summer break.

Thank you for continuing to invest in our school. Together, we are creating facilities and opportunities that will benefit our children for many years to come.

Howick College zone - proposed changes

We have still not heard back from the Ministry. We are actively following up and will inform the community as soon as we have further information. The last we heard, they needed to iron out some issues with the school transport department.

How we communicate with you

Below are mechanisms for communicating with you. Some will require a bit of setup and getting used to on your part, but will hopefully soon become normal.

  • School App - most of our notices and letters are shared via the @school App. You will need to download the App and talk to our office to sort out your login and password. This is a pretty crucial tool to get set up sooner, rather than later. It also has other helpful features that you can navigate.

  • Weekly Notices - these are sent out on Fridays and have important notices about the week ahead. These are on our website and sent to you each week via the App.

  • ClassDojo - Its main purpose will be a closed ‘social media’ format for teachers to give you a window into the classroom. Contact your child’s teacher for help with ClassDojo. Please note that this app is free for you - but when you log in, there are options to pay for other features - there is no need to do so. The free, basic version is absolutely fine.

  • Website - our website has quite a lot of information you may find useful.

  • School Facebook page - You can follow us on Facebook by searching for our school. This is purely a social media platform used to celebrate our children and events - and not usually used to inform. It is not a place for questions or queries.

  • Text messages - We will use this if we need to get urgent information out to you or if there is an emergency. You may sometimes get a text if we haven’t heard from you regarding a child’s absence.

The above is a list of the mechanisms we use. You, of course, are always welcome to call into the office, email or make an appointment to meet with relevant personnel.

However you choose to celebrate, we hope this Matariki brings you time to rest, reflect, and create special memories with those you love.

This year we are getting a new covered court and astro-turf where our basketball court is. Any support is much appreciated. Bonus: you can get a tax rebate on these donations!

New to Kindo: Autopay

Staying on top of school payments just got a whole lot easier.
Did you know you can set up your Kindo account so it gets topped up automatically?

Kindo’s latest feature, Autopay, works with automatic payments to help you stay on top of school payment requests.

How it works:
🔄 You set your preferences (types of payments you want covered, wallet reserve etc)
📥 Kindo emails you 48 hours before a payment run (so you can review or make changes)
✅ Kindo pays the request automatically

Less hassle, fewer "wait, did I pay that?" moments, and more peace of mind for busy families.

We are actively pursuing answers, so please watch this space!

Coming soon… a Covered Court!

We are incredibly excited to share that this year’s Athon fundraiser (and other fundraisers) is helping support a major project for our school - a covered court over our basketball court! This will be a huge asset for our tamariki, providing a sheltered space for sport, play, assemblies, performances and outdoor learning all year round. Projects like this come with a significant price tag and are simply not something the Ministry funding covers for schools like ours. We work hard to put every dollar we can back into improving opportunities and facilities for our children, so we would greatly appreciate your support. Please get behind our Athon fundraiser by helping your child gather sponsorships. Every contribution makes a difference and helps us continue making Clevedon School the very best place for our tamariki to learn, grow and thrive.

Howick College Zone Consultation - Consultation closes 29 May

Feedback closes at the end of this month. We have worked hard to get to this point and it is a very important change for our tamariki for years to come. Please take a moment to have your say around the proposed area - as it does not capture our whole school zone.

The school and the Board have made submissions to

  1. express our appreciation and support that this proposed change has progressed this far

  2. to respectfully request that the area is modified to include our entire school zone

Please note that this is not about removing existing pathways. Papakura High School and Alfriston College would remain in-zone options. The proposal is to add Howick College as an additional, third, in-zone choice for our families.

You can read more about the proposed amendment below.

Howick College Zone Consultation - Please ensure you give your feedback

Over the past couple of years, we have been working closely with the Ministry of Education to have Clevedon included in the Howick College zone, so that our students can access it as a zoned high school option.

This is not about removing existing pathways. Papakura High School and Alfriston College would remain in-zone options. The proposal is to add Howick College as an additional, third in-zone choice for our families.

The process has now reached the consultation stage, although nothing is confirmed at this point.

Consultation is open until the end of May, and we would really value strong community engagement. You will also notice that not all of Clevedon School’s current zone is included in the proposed new zone, so it is important to review the details carefully.

This has taken significant time and effort to reach this stage, and as the outcome is not yet guaranteed, we are proceeding thoughtfully to give it the best chance of success. We encourage you to take a look at the proposal and submit your feedback if you feel it is appropriate using the link below.

Wishing all our mums, aunts, grans, and the many special women in our children’s lives a very happy Mother’s Day this Sunday. Thank you for everything you do to raise such wonderful young people. We truly appreciate the care, time, and effort you give every day.

Upstander week and mufti on Friday

Next week we will be focusing on what it means to be an upstander with our tamariki. The week’s learning will conclude with our anti-bullying pink shirt day on Friday. On this day, children can wear anything pink. No gold coin etc is required.

Please help us by talking to your children about what upstanders do and how they act. Differentiate between being a ‘tell-tale’ or ‘narking’, as our seniors call it, and being an upstander. Upstanders speak up and act when someone is being hurt (physically or emotionally) or doing something that can cause themselves or someone else harm.

Hand, foot and mouth disease and chicken pox

We have been advised of cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease in our junior school.

This is a common childhood illness that usually clears up on its own, but it can spread easily in a school setting. As this is quite contagious, we ask that you please keep an eye out for symptoms in your child.

Our Public Health Nurse has advised that children should be kept at home for 7 days, or until any blisters have started to crust over/dry.

Common symptoms to watch for include:

• Fever

• Sore throat

• Small blisters on the hands, feet, or around the mouth

If your child becomes unwell, please keep them at home and seek medical advice if needed. You can read more about this here or seek advice from your GP.

We also have chickenpox going around at present - similarly to hand, foot and mouth disease, please keep your child home until blisters have dried and they are no longer contagious. You can read more about chickenpox by clicking here.

Thank you for your support in helping us minimise the spread.

Ag Day committee invitation

The Ag day committee will hold their AGM meeting on Thursday, 14 May at 3.15pm (in the staffroom). If you are thinking of joining a committee but are not sure which one, this is a small team of dedicated parents that meets about once a month in term three. We know lots of our whānau are passionate about Ag Day. To keep this awesome event going for our tamariki, we need more parents to step up and be part of this committee. Come along to the first meeting and get to know the team. We would love to warmly welcome new members.

Week 3 is also New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week. NZSL is one of NZ’s official languages and we are lucky at Clevedon to have the support of a sign language tutor a couple of times a week for some of our classes - as some of our hard of hearing tamariki learn speech and sign language alongside each other at school. You can learn more about NZSL by visiting this site.

Mothers, Aunties and Grans day (MAGs) - Friday

On Friday, 8 May we would love to celebrate ‘MAGs day’ with all our Mothers, Aunties and Grans. Classrooms will be open for these significant women in our children’s lives and there will be planned activities to take part in with your children. Classrooms will be open from 8:30-10:00am. We look forward to seeing you there. All whānau members are welcome.

Our Year 7/8 students are heading off to camp, an experience that is always a real highlight and an important part of their learning and development.

The total cost per student, including camp and transport, is $390. We are aware that for some of our families this is a significant cost.

If you are in a position to support, we invite you to consider “adopting a child” by contributing towards camp costs. Donations can be made for part or all of a camp fee. All contributions will be treated with care and discretion.

To make a donation, please visit Kindo. This option is available on the front page. These contributions are classified as donations and are tax deductible.

Math-athon

A reminder to please practice those basic facts. Children who can recall their basic facts with speed and accuracy are more likely to be able to pick up complex problems. Please practice these nightly.

Fuel response and planning ahead

As you are  aware, the Government has introduced a National Fuel Plan. New Zealand is currently at Phase 1, “Watchful”.

At school, we are operating as normal. However, we do encourage you to think ahead about how your child may get to and from school if the phase settings change.

Some practical suggestions to consider:

  • If you live along one of the school bus routes but your child does not usually catch the bus, it may be helpful to become familiar with the route and how it works. Giving it a trial run can help your child feel confident if needed later. Our office ladies can help you with questions around buses.

  • Consider who lives near you and what carpooling options may be available with other families. Planning ahead with whānau that you know will help if phases change quickly.

  •  If possible, consider walking or biking options for shorter distances, ensuring this is safe and appropriate.

  • Have a back up plan for pick ups if you are unable to travel at short notice.

Planning ahead now will help minimise disruption if there are any changes in the coming weeks. Thank you for your support.

Attendance

It is imperative that students attend school every day that they can and that they are on time (other than when they are too sick to attend). If a student misses one day of school every two weeks, they miss more than a whole year of school by 16 years of age. Please help your children to build strong habits of regular school attendance - this will matter when they are older and hit their high school years.

If your child is away, please let us know straight away. You can do so by:

  • Using the school App - there is an ‘absence’ icon on there (preferred option)

  • Emailing attendance@clevedonschool.co.nz

  • Leaving a message on the answer phone (not a preferred option)

Our office gets very busy in the mornings and they need to account for every child by 9:10am at the latest. It helps them tremendously, to not have to make many phone calls to find out where children are.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Term 2 - Week 1 notices and reminders

Thank you for an amazing, fun-filled term. Our students have settled in well and we have packed a lot into the past 10 weeks.

We look forward to seeing you all on Monday 20 April.

Math-athon

Our annual ‘athon’ kicks off on the first Friday of next term. This year, our focus is on basic facts. Developing quick recall is an important foundation for success in mathematics, as it reduces cognitive load and allows students to focus on solving more complex problems.

We would love your support in encouraging your child to practise at home and in getting behind this as a school fundraiser.

Sponsorship forms and lists will come home on the first Friday. If you have any queries about the list your child has been given, please contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for your support.

Please help us by ensuring brain food is easy to eat. Chopped fruit or vegetables are ideal.

School Contributions

A gentle reminder to please pay your school contribution via Kindo if you haven’t already done so. Kindo allows you to spread payments over time, making this more manageable.

These contributions help fund the many extras our school provides that are not covered by Ministry funding. There is an expectation within the current funding model that schools will bridge this gap where possible.

We greatly appreciate your support with this, if you are in a position to contribute.

Library books for end of term

School Values

This term, our school-wide focus has been Kia kaha - Be strong. Alongside this, we have been explicitly teaching and celebrating the important sub-values that sit beneath it: being resilient, persevering, and being upstanders.

Across the school, we have seen many examples of students showing strength in their learning and relationships - working through challenges, sticking with tasks when things feel tricky, and supporting one another with kindness and courage. It has been great to see this language becoming part of everyday conversations.

As part of our Whānau Kōrero homework, you will have noticed prompts designed to encourage discussion at home around these values. We encourage you to continue these conversations. Talking together about what resilience looks like in different situations, what it means to persevere, and how we can stand up for others, helps strengthen the connection between home and school.

One area we are gently working to shift, particularly with some of our older students, is the idea of “not snitching.” We are helping students understand that there is an important difference between telling tales and speaking up when someone is being hurt, excluded, or treated unfairly. Being an upstander means showing courage and care for others, and knowing when it is right to seek help from a trusted adult. Your support in reinforcing this message at home is very valuable.

We appreciate your ongoing partnership in growing these shared values with our tamariki.

Next term, our focus will move to Kia whakapono - Be trustworthy, with an emphasis on being principled, responsible, and accountable.

Our school values were developed around three years ago through consultation with our whānau and tamariki, and it is wonderful to see them continuing to come to life in meaningful ways across our school.

Ngā mihi for your continued support.

Last day for the school pool - 29 March

A reminder that as per the pool use agreement, the pool’s last day is Sunday, 29 March. Thank you to all who have supported us by having a key this season.

School Uniform Reminder

A quick reminder to please ensure your child is wearing the correct school uniform each day. In particular, we are noticing an increase in incorrect footwear - shoes should be mainly black.

As we head into the cooler months, now is a good time to check that your child still fits their winter uniform and has everything they need.

Uniform requirements can be found on our website here.

Please also note that items such as pants, skorts, and hats do not need to be purchased from The Uniform Shoppe. More affordable options are available from stores such as The Warehouse and Kmart, as long as they are plain navy blue and meet our uniform guidelines.

Thank you for your support in helping us maintain a strong sense of pride and consistency in our school uniform.

Our teachers are having an amazing day, being inspired by Dr Murray Gadd - a guru in the space of the teaching of writing. We’re focusing on motivating reluctant writers, the new curriculum and reading and writing links. Thank you for your support, whānau.

Communication tools

  • @School App - This is linked to our student management system, which means we can send out large and smaller group emails easily. It’s as up to date as the information you provide us with. We use this for whole school emails and notices as well as some smaller group messages e.g. to a particular class or to a bus list etc. This app is completely free. You do need to check your own notification settings. Sometimes we ask for permission for things through this app - when there is no payment required. Contact the office for any help with this app.

  • ClassDojo - this is new to us this year (previously we used Seesaw). This is primarily for the class teacher’s use. Teachers can use this platform to share photos of class learning and keep you updated with what is going on in their room. Teachers may use this to remind you about such things as swimming, mufti days, etc., too. Its primary function is a ‘closed’ social media page to give you updates on class learning. THIS IS FREE TOO - but the app suggests you pay for a monthly subscription - ignore this! You do not need to pay. Contact your child’s teacher for any help with this app.

  • Kindo - We use this for payments and permissions when payment is a part of it. If you have issues with your Kindo account, please contact Kindo’s helpdesk. In some instances, the office may be able to help you.

All three of the apps can be accessed via a laptop/computer or on your phone.

From next week, your child will receive home learning to complete. They will bring home a home learning book that clearly outlines the expectations for the week. In previous years, this information was shared via Seesaw. Home learning will come home on a Friday and is due back on Friday.

We understand that all families have different after-school commitments. If you are not able to complete the home learning (particularly the Mathletics/EP activities), that is absolutely fine. Reading each night, and learning of basic facts would be the two crucial ones to cover, if time is tight.

Please click here to view our home learning expectations by team. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Who do I see if I have a query or concern about my child

  • If, after working with the teacher, you have more queries or need further clarification, please contact the right team leader or Mrs Park, our deputy principal.

    • Year 6-8 - Mrs Stacey Connolly

We can also set up Zoom meetings if you are not able to make it to school. All staff email addresses can be found on our website.

School App

Our school app is our main mechanism for getting comms out to you. Please check that you are still signed into the app if you have used it before, and if not, ensure you are set up before school starts. For assistance, contact the school office.

This message, and others have been emailed to you (in case our new families do not have the app set up) and also sent out on the app. If you did not get an app notification, please check that you are still logged in and your app notifications are on and enabled on your phone. From week 3 only the app will be used and you may miss out on crucial information.

Swimming pool permission - action needed

This term we will continue to use our school pool during class times. We require all parents to complete a permission form for every child to be able to use our school pool during school hours. This permission form can be found on our school app. Click on the ‘Permission Slips’ icon in our @school app. You will need to complete this for all your children if you have more than one child-click on each of their profiles to fill it out. Students without permission will not be able to swim in the pool.

Teachers will let you know which days they will be taking their classes swimming. We will require parent helpers to help out with supervision, so please let your child’s teacher know if you are able to support us with this. If we don’t have enough parent helpers, we will unfortunately not be able to take classes to the pool.

Open morning and shared kai - Friday

On Thursday morning, you are invited to visit your child’s class from 8:30am to 10am. You can see what the room is like, and what they’ve been working on over the last few days of school and get a feel for the class. As ākonga (students) will only have had five days at school, there may not be a lot of work to see.

Shared kai

The class will have shared kai together from 9:30-10am to celebrate Waitangi Day.

  • Please send your child with a plate of ‘easy to eat and serve’ food

  • Feel free to stay and join in

  • Let your child’s teacher know if your child has any allergies

  • Have you updated your child’s medical information with the office (if necessary)?

Introducing our specialist teachers

We have a group of very dedicated teachers who are not based in their own classroom who you might hear about. Your child may work with some of them over the course of the year. Below is a list of these teachers to help you put a face to the name.

Joy Lendrum - Joy is our Literacy Support Teacher. She works mainly in the year 0-3 area, though some students in year 4-8 may work with her too. Joy has a passion for literacy and will take small groups and work 1:1 with pupils to develop their reading skills.

Tina Baptist - Tina has stepped into our Learning Support Coordinator role this year. She will be working across a number of classes, taking groups, supporting teachers or working 1:1 with some of our tamariki. Tina has a wealth of experience across all year levels and subject areas.

Jo Odds - Jo is our performing arts teacher extraordinaire! Jo will work for an hour a week in each of our classes, focusing on music, drama and dance. This year, Jo will lead our school production which will be in term two. We can’t wait to see what else Miss Odd’s has in store for us this year!

Cory Bremner - Cory is our STEM teacher for year 7&8 and will be room six’s release teacher one day a week. Our intermediate tamariki are very lucky to have Cory taking them for hands-on experiences, cooking, sewing, designing, cutting, using the electronics kits etc once a week.

Cara Popping - Cara will take some groups and work 1:1 with some children in term one this year. Cara will mostly work across year 4-8 helping give a boost to some of our learners. Cara has experience across all year levels.

School App

Our school app is our main mechanism for getting comms out to you. Please check that you are still signed into the app if you have used it before, and if not, ensure you are set up before school starts. For assistance, contact the school office.

This message, and others for the next couple of weeks will be emailed to you (in case our new families do not have the app set up) and also sent out on the app. If you did not get an app notification, please check that you are still logged in and your app notifications are on and enabled on your phone. From week 3, only the app will be used.

How we communicate with you

If you are new to us you may not know our mechanisms for communicating with you.

  • ClassDojo - Teachers will be in touch to connect you to this App. ClassDojo replaces Seesaw. Its main purpose will be a closed ‘social media’ format for teachers to give you a window into the classroom. We will roll this out in the first week or two.

Buses

If your child catches the school bus, please let the office know which days they will be on the bus. You can do this by filling in this form and returning it to the office.

Waste free weekdays

We would like to encourage all our families to ensure lunch boxes are waste free. This will help us greatly at school and help reduce waste. Teachers may share some lunchbox ideas with you on ClassDojo over the next few weeks.

School structure and staffing

Please see below for this year’s school structure and the teaching team staff.

Please note that late last year, we made a change to the structure of our Year 7/8 team, moving from three small classes to two regular sized classes. On the last day of the school year, one of our valued teachers, Bex Wilson, was diagnosed with cancer. Bex has since had her surgery and is currently recovering and is due back by around 9 February (TBC). At this stage it is unclear what further procedures might be needed throughout the year. Bex remains a highly valued member of our staff and will continue to be an integral part of the Kōwhai team, working across both classes as a co-teacher with Mrs Dhaliwal and Mrs Connolly, and running targeted groups. Having the students in two set classes ensures consistency and continuity whilst having the benefit of an additional teacher running groups. We are fully supportive of Bex as she focuses on her recovery and look forward to welcoming her back in a full-time capacity when she is well enough to do so.

We welcome two new teachers to our team. Mrs Larissa Wiseman who is joining the Kauri team, taking over from Mrs McGinty who moved to Waiuku, and Miss Stephanie Rudd who will be in the Tōtara team, taking over from Mrs Baptist who is now our Learning Support Coordinator.
